To create a front and back garden in keeping with the property’s original features but also to compliment the new extension at the rear. The clients, a young couple with two small children, were keen to create different zones in the rear garden to give every user a good, usable space to enjoy.
The front garden was a prime example of a space that had been used and trashed by builders renovating the house. We renewed everything, from layout and structure, to plants and finishing, in order to give this beautiful period house the entrance it deserves.
We replaced the old single-skin dwarf wall with two double-skin walls and three piers. The layout of the path leading to the house is redirected to allow sufficient space for the large bay tree as well as extra planting beds to soften the approach to the front door. We used a traditional yet slick-looking white limestone for the paths and to cap the low retaining walls, accompanied by reclaimed red brick walls and piers with Bath stone coping to finish. This combination maintained the traditional style of the building but also complimented the bright and spacious contemporary feel of the inside of the property.
The back garden is the perfect place for the whole family. Adjoining the new extension, a large patio equipped with outdoor furniture and fringed by soft planting is a fantastic space for all to enjoy. The western red cedar batten fence along the south boundary gives the beautifully planted bed the perfect backdrop.
The lawn area behind the patio includes a sunken trampoline which the children love and entertains them for hours – it has also been known to entice the inner child out of adults!
To the rear, the bark mulch woodland play area features multiple styles of swings, coupled with various children’s play frames, which again encourage independent play.
